Boniface Muanga Mengo was on Saturday, January 18, 2025 elected as a Univision Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited’s supervisory committee member. He garnered a total of 669 votes defeating his two rivals Ngyema Kimweli and Simon Masyuko.
The second position went to Ngyema Kimweli who got a total of 568 votes. And Simon Masyuko came third by scooping a total of 314 votes. The elections that were held at the Kitui Multipurpose Development Training Institute were for the Univision Sacco’s Kitui Central/Katulani/Matinyani/Kitui West/Lower Yatta Electoral Zone.
The society has a total of thirteen electoral zones. The 50 years old sacco has its headquarters in Kitui Town. The Kitui Central District Cooperatives Officer, Dennis Muthoka, was the presiding officer. He officially announced the results. A total of 1,558 votes were casted with seven of them getting spoiled. Muthoka highly thanked the members for having conducted some peaceful elections. And all the three candidates also addressed the members after the results were announced by the presiding officer.
Kimweli and Masyuko accepted the defeat and they congratulated Mengo for the victory. In his speech after being declared the winner, Boniface Muanga Mengo highly appreciated the members for electing him as their supervisory committee member. And he assured them some “correct service.” “I assure you that your property at the sacco will be protected. As you know me, I am a man of no nonsense.
I will make sure all goes well. I will do my role and I will not fear any mankind. Under my supervisory leadership, the members will get benefits. The sacco will go well,” he said in his speech to the members. And on his part, Ngyema Kimweli said: “I accept the defeat and I support Mengo. And I want to thank my supporters for giving me some 568 votes,” he said.
The Univision Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited Deputy Chief Executive Officer Cyrus Mutinda, the Kitui County Cooperatives Director Sammy Kasanga Musomba and the County Water and Irrigation Chief Officer Bretta Mwangangi also addressed the occasion. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kitui County Executive Secretary Simon Mutunga Nding’o also addressed the function.
He talked out about the education in the Kitui County. “Our Grade Nine pupils are in the class. They are learning well,” Nding’o said. The KNUT official lauded the “excellent performance” in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) national examination in Kitui County. “The KCSE results have been released in the country and we are happy with the performance in our county.
Our Form Four students have performed excellently. We appreciate our teachers. They did some proper teaching,” he said. Nding’o also talked out about the capitation. “We are asking the national government to provide our county’s schools with the capitation. There is no capitation in our schools,” he said. Nding’o appealed to the Univision Sacco’s members to attend “our sacco’s AGM on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at the Ithookwe Primary School.” The KNUT Kitui County Chairman Samuel Kathinuku also addressed the occasion.
He called upon the national government to provide the Kitui County’s schoolchildren with some food. “We have no food for this time because of the drought. And we are appealing to the government to provide our county’s pupils with some food, especially in the comprehensive schools in the area,” Kathinuku, who is also a KNUT National Executive Council member said.
“We in the Kitui County highly appreciate the government for having given us some permanent JSS (Junior Secondary School) teachers and interns,” he added. The KNUT Kitui County Women’s Representative Mwikali Katee also addressed the function among others.
