Kitui County Marks World Wetlands Day with a Call for Conservation

Kitui County joined the world in commemorating World Wetlands Day at Waasya Primary School, Mwingi Central, under the theme “Protecting Wetlands for a Common Future.”

Speaking at the event, CECm for Environment, Energy, Climate Change, Forestry, Natural and Mineral Resources, Richard Mwendandu, reaffirmed the County’s commitment to environmental conservation.

He emphasized the need for collaboration with local communities living near wetlands to ensure sustainable protection.

“Governor Malombe’s agenda is centered on development, and we must safeguard our wetlands as key environmental assets. We urge residents to plant indigenous trees and prioritize conservation efforts rather than politicizing development projects,” Mwendandu said.

He also commended Waasya Primary School for its active role in tree planting and environmental conservation.

The event was graced by CECm for Agriculture and Livestock Dr. Stephen Kimwele Mbaya, Chief Officer David Soi Masai, and Kivou Ward MCA Sammy Musili Munyithya, who pledged full support for county government projects.

Nationally, the event was marked at Ondiri Wetlands in Kiambu County.

Key partners included *NEMA, NDMA, KFS, Kenya Red Cross, WRA, KEFRI, Africa Sanddam Foundation, Wildlife Clubs of Kenya among others.
