Big Win for Kenyan Teachers as Parliament Acts on Hon. Charles Nguna’s Petition

Thousands of Kenyan teachers have a reason to celebrate after the National Assembly officially considered a public petition by Hon. Charles Nguna, MP, seeking fair deployment and remuneration of classroom teachers serving as headteachers across the country.

The petition, dated 16th August 2023, urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to review and harmonize the salaries of classroom teachers who were deployed as headteachers but were not enjoying the same pay as their counterparts who were appointed before the signing of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

In a landmark decision, the National Assembly has recommended that TSC revise the salary structure to ensure equity among all headteachers who underwent similar interviews and qualifications, regardless of when they were appointed.

In addition, Parliament has proposed the allocation of funds in the upcoming 2025/2026 financial year to facilitate the promotion of affected teachers — a move aimed at addressing long-standing disparities in the education sector.

The development has been welcomed by education stakeholders and teachers’ unions, who have long advocated for fairness in teacher promotions and remuneration. This resolution is expected to boost morale among teachers and enhance leadership in public schools nationwide.
