By YK.
Women Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) from across Kenya convened at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi for the 5th Annual Legislative Pre-Summit, a key forum aimed at enhancing women’s representation and influence in governance.
Machakos County Assembly Speaker, Hon. Anne Kiusya, who also serves as the Chairperson of the County Assemblies Forum (CAF), officially opened the summit. As the only female County Assembly Speaker in the country, Hon. Kiusya reaffirmed her commitment to championing women’s empowerment and gender equality in leadership.
“Women must not only take up leadership positions but also sustain their influence and push for inclusive governance at all levels,” she stated.
The summit brought together hundreds of women MCAs and notable leaders in gender advocacy. Hon. Hellen Ndeti, Chairperson of the Machakos County Assembly’s Gender and Equality Committee, urged all County Assemblies to establish Gender Committees to ensure gender mainstreaming in policymaking.
Angela Wangeci, representing UN-WOMEN Country Director Ms. Antonia N’gabala Sodonon, highlighted the role of international partnerships in advancing women’s leadership. Meanwhile, Commissioner Michael Nzomo from the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) outlined strategies for promoting gender-responsive governance in counties.
The Pre-Summit serves as a critical platform for empowering women legislators, strengthening accountability, and enhancing oversight at the county level.
Hon. Kiusya expressed her gratitude to all the leaders, stakeholders, and partners who contributed to the event’s success, reaffirming CAF’s commitment to advancing gender-inclusive governance across the country.
