Can the REAL Kalonzo Musyoka Step Out of Raila’s Shadow and Lead the Opposition?

By YOANA KIMWELE.

In the wake of President William Ruto’s broad-based government arrangement with Raila Odinga, the question lingering in Kenya’s political landscape is: Where does this leave Kalonzo Musyoka?

For years, Kalonzo has played the role of Raila’s deputy in the opposition, loyally backing him in multiple elections. But with Raila now aligning himself with Ruto’s government—through key appointments of his allies—Kalonzo finds himself at a crossroads. Will he take the mantle of opposition leadership, or is he waiting for Raila to dictate his next move?

Raila’s recent engagements, including his reported collaboration with Ruto in the African Union Commission chairmanship bid, signal that he is no longer in active opposition. His close allies, too, have been accommodated in government, further cementing the idea that the Azimio coalition is in limbo. Kalonzo, however, is not part of this political matrix.

If Kalonzo is to emerge as a formidable force ahead of the 2027 presidential election, he must break free from Raila’s grip and Uhuru Kenyatta’s influence. The time has come for him to define his political path—either as a true opposition leader or as yet another follower waiting for Raila’s endorsement.

Political analysts argue that Raila will never back Kalonzo for the presidency. History has shown that the ODM leader has always positioned himself at the center of opposition politics, leaving his allies to play secondary roles. If Kalonzo continues waiting, he risks being politically sidelined once again.

For Kalonzo to shine, he must take bold steps—rally his Wiper party, consolidate the opposition forces, and directly challenge Ruto’s administration. If he remains indecisive, 2027 might be yet another election where he plays second fiddle instead of leading the charge.

The ball is in Kalonzo’s court. Will he step up, or will he keep waiting for Raila’s signal?
