Tensions remain high at the Kitui County Assembly as MCAs engage in physical fights over leadership changes recently approved by the Wiper Party. The situation escalated into chaos on Wednesday, with lawmakers exchanging blows and kicks in a dramatic standoff that has thrown the assembly into disarray.
Speaker Kevin Kinengo has refused to recognize the new leadership, standing firm to protect his allies. His defiance has sparked violent clashes, with MCAs opposed to his stance forcefully pushing for the changes. In the melee, a sergeant-at-arms lost several teeth, while Matinyani MCA Sylvester Munyalo (Yaamu) was ejected from the chamber—only for him to climb back over the assembly wall in defiance.
With the situation spiraling out of control, Speaker Kinengo was forced to postpone the sitting. Reports indicate that with 39 MCAs backing the leadership changes against 21 supporting Kinengo, the Speaker’s grip on power is weakening. Facing mounting pressure, he is now considering sending the Assembly on recess in a last-ditch effort to buy time and rally support.
However, the majority MCAs remain steadfast, insisting that the Wiper Party’s directives must be implemented without delay. The battle for control of the Assembly is far from over, and all eyes are now on Speaker Kinengo. Will he weather this political storm, or is his leadership on the brink of collapse?
TCD Digital will continue to provide real-time updates as the situation unfolds.
