Tensions boiled over in Saboti, Trans Nzoia County, after a controversial photo shared on a church WhatsApp group sparked outrage among congregants, culminating in the burning down of the church building.
The incident began when a newly married female choir member mistakenly uploaded a sensitive photo of herself alongside the church pastor. The nature of the image, which quickly circulated among church members, fueled suspicions and anger within the congregation.
According to eyewitnesses, the photo ignited heated discussions in the community, leading to a group of irate worshippers storming the church compound and setting it ablaze late Sunday evening. No injuries were reported, but the church structure and several items inside were completely destroyed.
Local police have launched an investigation into both the fire and the circumstances surrounding the photo. Neither the pastor nor the choir member has issued a public statement as of press time.
Community leaders and clergy from neighboring churches are calling for calm and urging residents to allow the investigative process to take its course. “We understand the community’s anger, but violence is not the answer,” said one local elder. “We must seek truth and reconciliation through peaceful means.”
Authorities are also warning against the spread of misinformation and further incitement on social media, stressing that those found responsible for the arson will face legal consequences.
Further updates will follow as the story develops.
