Kitui CECM for Trade, Rose Mutuku, has termed cooperatives as engines of inclusive economic growth, community empowerment, and sustainable development as the county joined the world in celebrating International Cooperatives Day, popularly known as Ushirika Day.
Speaking when she graced today’s celebrations in Kitui Town, Mutuku noted that the annual event is more than a ceremonial occasion, but a meaningful recognition of the impact cooperatives have in transforming lives, promoting democratic business practices, and driving social change.
“I am proud to witness the resilience, innovation, and unity that define the cooperative spirit in our country and beyond. Today, we are not only celebrating past achievements but also reaffirming our shared commitment to building a sustainable and equitable future through the cooperative movement.” She said.
This year’s theme, “Cooperatives: Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World,” highlights the cooperative movement’s ability to respond to pressing global and local challenges, including inequality, unemployment, and environmental issues.

She noted that the government views cooperatives as crucial partners in improving livelihoods and advancing development across the county.
She further encouraged Kitui residents to support local businesses by purchasing goods made in Kitui, noting that doing so would uplift local producers and strengthen the county’s economic base, highlighting that Kitui is home to over 460 registered cooperative societies actively contributing to local development.
