Farmers in Katheuni Village Benefit from Pest Management Guidance and Innovative Irrigation Solutions

Farmers in Katheuni Village, Matinyani Ward, received a major boost in agricultural support this week during a series of field visits focused on pest management and farm innovations.

Led by agricultural officers Monicah Muthoka and Cosmus Mwendwa, the visits targeted smallholder farmers facing persistent pest challenges. Two farms, owned by Toma Kilinga and Juliana Mwangangi, were selected for hands-on consultations. The officers offered expert advice on integrated pest management (IPM) techniques aimed at minimizing crop loss and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

At Toma Kilinga’s vegetable farm, the team addressed specific pest threats and recommended preventative strategies to curb outbreaks. Similarly, Juliana Mwangangi was guided through practical, eco-friendly solutions tailored to her farm’s conditions. Both farmers welcomed the personalized support, which emphasized maintaining healthy crops without relying heavily on chemical pesticides.

In a separate visit, innovation took center stage at Gideon’s Farm, where the farmer showcased a creative solution to irrigation challenges. Using cooking gas (LPG) to power a water pump, Gideon has developed a cost-effective and reliable system that supports consistent irrigation despite limited access to electricity. The technique has been praised as a game-changer for small-scale farmers dealing with water shortages.

The field visit initiative not only provided crucial pest control support but also highlighted the ingenuity of local farmers in adapting to environmental and infrastructural challenges. Agricultural officers commended the efforts and pledged continued technical support to boost productivity in the region.

The visits form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen climate-smart agriculture and empower rural communities with knowledge and tools for sustainable farming.
