Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially declared his intention to run for president in the upcoming 2027 General Election, positioning himself as the “Gen Z Presidential Candidate.”
Speaking during a press engagement, Maraga emphasized the urgent need to empower Kenya’s youth, noting that over 80% of the population is under the age of 40. “Yes, I am the Gen Z Presidential candidate. I have children, and we must mentor young people,” he stated.
Maraga unveiled the key pillars of his campaign, which include fighting corruption, tackling police brutality, restoring constitutionalism, and promoting professional governance. He called upon young Kenyans to rally behind his vision of rebuilding the nation on principles of justice, integrity, and accountability.
“This country needs tranquility, and it is the youth who must take the lead in restoring it. I’m here to walk that journey with them,” he said.
The former CJ’s announcement marks a rare entry of a former top judicial officer into active politics, and is already sparking national conversation, especially among young voters.
