Yatta Kwa Vonza Member of kitui County Assembly (MCA) has taken a proactive step in supporting local communities to preserve water using simple, locally available materials.
In a move aimed at promoting sustainable water conservation, the MCA donated 250 gunny bags (ngunia) to Kamūmbū Agribusiness Group and Masimba Self-Help Group. The bags were used to block Katothya River in Kanyonyoo village, helping to trap and retain water for agricultural and domestic use.
Speaking at the handover event, Hon. Nding’o emphasized the importance of embracing local innovations to address water scarcity. “This initiative demonstrates that we don’t always need expensive solutions to solve our challenges. By using available materials and local knowledge, we can make a real impact,” he stated.
Residents praised the initiative as a cost-effective and practical solution to water shortages. “With these gunny bags, we can store water longer, which will greatly benefit our farming activities,” said a member of Kamūmbū Agribusiness Group.
Hon. Nding’o reaffirmed his commitment to supporting community-led projects that enhance water security and agricultural productivity in the region. His efforts align with broader county initiatives to improve water access and resilience against climate change.
This innovation is expected to inspire other communities in Kitui South to adopt similar low-cost water conservation methods.
