Former Machakos gubernatorial candidate Hon. Waita Nzioka on Wednesday paid a visit to the renowned Wamunyu Handicraft Society, where he interacted with local artisans and witnessed firsthand the dedication and craftsmanship behind their celebrated wood carvings.
Speaking during the visit, Waita praised the artisans’ work as a vital part of Kenya’s cultural heritage and a lifeline for hundreds of families in the region.
“This is more than just making art,” he said. “It’s about keeping our culture alive and creating income for our people. Wamunyu’s woodcarving legacy is something we must protect and grow.”
Established in 1965, the Wamunyu Handicraft Society is one of Kenya’s oldest and most respected artisan cooperatives. It currently supports over 2,000 members, most of whom rely on carving for their daily livelihoods. Their work is exported across the globe, earning recognition for both quality and authenticity.
Waita emphasized the need for stronger county and national support for local industries, especially those that uplift rural communities through skills, creativity, and heritage.
“As we head into the future, initiatives like this must be prioritized,” he added. “We must support what is ours and help it grow.”
The visit is part of Waita’s ongoing engagements across Machakos County under the banner of #MasakuMbee2027, a movement believed to be laying the groundwork for a fresh bid in the 2027 general elections.
