Ikanga MCA Hon. Cyrus Sonko Calls for Zero Tolerance on Vandalism of County Infrastructure

Ikanga, Kitui County – Hon. Cyrus Sonko, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Ikanga, has issued a strong call for zero tolerance towards vandalism, urging authorities to develop robust measures to protect the county’s vital assets and critical infrastructure.

His appeal comes in response to the increasing incidents of wanton damage, vandalism, theft, and degradation of essential county installations.

Addressing the public, Hon. Sonko highlighted the targeted vandalism affecting solar panels, Mlika mwizi street lights, water tanks, electric cables, power lines, roads, metallic window panes, water pipes, and water meters.

He stressed the urgent need for legislative action to pass a bill that provides a clear framework for the protection of the county’s vital installations and infrastructure.

“These county assets and installations are crucial for the social and economic well-being of the people of Kitui,” Hon. Sonko emphasized.

“If these are destroyed, degraded, or rendered unavailable, it would negatively impact the lives and prosperity of our residents.There is a pressing need to effectively secure our county’s vital installations to ensure shared prosperity, resilient infrastructure, and ongoing development. ”Hon. Sonko’s sentiments were echoed by the Assistant County Commissioner Mr Antony maina who also addressed the issue during the Madaraka Day celebrations at Ikanga Market.

The Assistant County Commissioner underscored the importance of safeguarding these installations, highlighting the critical role they play in the community’s daily life and long-term development.

The call for action comes as the county grapples with increasing instances of infrastructure vandalism, which not only disrupts essential services but also poses significant setbacks to the county’s development agenda.

The proposed bill aims to establish stringent measures and penalties to deter vandalism and ensure the protection of the county’s infrastructure.

The authorities are now being urged to collaborate with community members, security agencies, and other stakeholders to implement effective strategies to safeguard the county’s critical infrastructure, ensuring the continuous provision of vital services to the people of Kitui.//_
