Is Kyalo Muli the Future of Ukambani Politics After Kalonzo Musyoka?

As Ukambani politics enter a new phase of transformation and generational change, Liberal Party of Kenya leader and Anzauni Clan patron Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli is increasingly being viewed as a potential successor to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, whose four-decade political dominance in the region may be gradually waning.

Kyalo Muli, a former Educationist and Logistics expert, has emerged as one of the most serious and strategic political figures in Ukambani since former Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua launched his own political vehicle years ago. Muli’s National Liberal Party has been making some very aggressive strides, including grassroots mobilization, county-wide structures, and national recruitment ahead of the 2027 general election.

Despite not declaring the specific seat he intends to contest in 2027, political observers note that Muli’s movement is gaining momentum. Sources within the party hint at a well-structured plan to field a large number of candidates across Kitui, Makueni, and Machakos counties, and even outside Ukambani.

“Kyalo Muli has built his party differently. While others are still engaging in personality-based politics, he is organizing from the ground up. That is what Kalonzo did in the early ’90s. That is what makes people think he might be the future face of Ukambani,” said a political analyst based in Kitui.

Recent opinion polls in Kitui Central have placed Muli ahead of seasoned politicians including former runners up in 2022 and current Director of Coordination State House Hon Bonnie Musambi further fueling speculation that his popularity is no longer limited to elite circles but has trickled down to the grassroots. His bold and youthful approach, coupled with an inclusive message of change and economic empowerment, has resonated well especially with the youth and women.

At the same time, cracks are emerging within the Wiper Democratic Movement, with younger leaders expressing frustration over the perceived stagnation within the party and calling for generational renewal.

“We respect Kalonzo Musyoka, but it’s time for him to mentor others and not block rising leaders. Kyalo Muli represents what the future of Ukambani leadership could look like—focused, modern, and nationally appealing,” said a youth leader from Mwingi.

While Kyalo Muli has remained non-committal about whether he intends to run for president, member of parliament, or another office, insiders suggest that his ultimate goal may be much higher than just a parliamentary seat. His national engagements, policy-centered speeches, and strengthening of his party machinery hint at long-term ambitions.

As 2027 draws nearer, the political landscape in Ukambani appears set for a generational shift. Whether Kyalo Muli will eventually replace Kalonzo Musyoka as the region’s political supremo remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—he is no longer a fringe player in the political game. The National Liberal Party leader is a man to watch.
