Outspoken Kapsaret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has come to the defense of President William Ruto amid growing criticism from the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), including Nyeri Archbishop Anthony Muheria. In a statement, Sudi accused Archbishop Muheria of “double speaking” and questioned his authority to criticize the current administration.
Sudi argued that Muheria had shown leniency toward the previous administration and suggested that the cleric lacked the moral standing to critique President Ruto’s government. “Muheria lacks the moral authority to criticize the current regime because he is akin to doublespeak,” Sudi claimed, further accusing the bishop of engaging in “tribal politics” while overlooking previous government shortcomings.
The remarks follow a statement by the KCCB, where the bishops accused the Ruto administration of fostering a “culture of lies.” In a media address, the bishops argued that the government’s numerous unfulfilled promises were eroding the integrity and trust Kenyans deserve.
“The culture of lies is swiftly replacing the integrity and respect that Kenyans deserve. Basically, it is seen that the truth does not exist and if it does, it is what the government says,” read the bishops’ statement.
Archbishop Muheria, a vocal critic of the current administration, has particularly expressed concerns over the recent shift from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). “With the shift of NHIF to SHIF, we don’t seem to have had that thought of the sick, people who die because they can’t get services,” he said.
As the exchange intensifies, it highlights the growing friction between religious leaders and the government on matters of governance, healthcare, and public trust.
