The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is considering the establishment of a county office in Kitui, in a strategic move aimed at enhancing product certification, supporting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and strengthening market surveillance and consumer protection mechanisms.
This development was discussed during a high-level meeting between the KEBS team, led by the National Standards Council Chairperson Dr. Chris Wamalwa, and Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe.
The two parties explored areas of collaboration geared towards elevating product quality standards and promoting sustainable economic growth in the county.Dr. Wamalwa affirmed KEBS’s commitment to follow up on the implementation of the proposed initiatives, noting that decentralizing KEBS services to the county level will not only improve access to reliable standards but also empower local businesses with quality data to make informed decisions.
Governor Malombe welcomed the proposal, expressing optimism that the collaboration would bolster the county’s development agenda through enhanced product quality control, improved public health and safety, and support for local businesses to achieve compliance and thrive in both local and international markets.
The partnership is expected to significantly benefit Kitui’s economic landscape by fostering a culture of quality, ensuring consumer protection, and enabling MSMEs to compete effectively through certified and standardized products.
