Elected leaders from Kitui County led by Deputy Governor Wambua Kanani, including Members of Parliament and Members of the County Assembly, held a crucial consultative meeting in Nairobi with Interior Permanent Secretary, Dr. Raymond Omollo, to address long-standing security concerns at the border between Kitui and Tana River counties.
The meeting was also attended by PS Idris Dakota (Cabinet Affairs), held a consultative meeting with leaders from Tana River and Kitui counties, led by Governor H.E. Godhana Dhadho and Deputy Governor H.E. Dr. Augustine Wambua respectively.
The discussions focused on the progress of key government projects, addressing challenges in their implementation, and exploring strategies to enhance development and boost security in both regions.
The meeting brought together prominent leaders, including Kitui South MP Dr. Rachel Kaki Nyamai, Mwingi Central MP Dr. Gideon Mulyungi, Mwingi North MP Eng. Musyimi Nzengu, and Kitui County Women Representative Dr. Irene Kasalu. The discussions focused on key security issues affecting the region and aimed at fostering lasting solutions.
“I joined other Kitui leaders from the National Assembly and County Government in a security consultative meeting at the office of PS Internal Security, Mr. Raymond Omollo,” Dr. Rachel Nyamai told the press.
Several critical resolutions were made during the meeting, including:
1. Relocation of Camels: It was agreed that all camels grazing in Kitui County must be removed, addressing one of the key conflict points between local farmers and pastoralists.
2. Clear Boundary Demarcation: The leaders emphasized the need for a clear demarcation of boundaries between Kitui and Tana River counties to prevent future disputes.
3. Re-alignment of Administrative Officers: All administrative officers working in Kitui County but managed from Tana River must be reassigned to their respective counties, ensuring proper governance.
4. Continuation of Police Station Construction**: The Kitui County Government will continue the construction of police stations, as previously agreed, to enhance security infrastructure.
5. Equipping and Staffing of Police Stations: The already constructed police stations will be properly equipped and staffed to improve security operations across the region.
The leaders expressed optimism that these measures will help restore peace and stability in the area, which has seen tensions arising from cross-border conflicts, particularly involving pastoralist activities and land disputes.
