The County Executive for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Stephen Mbaya kimwele today led a team of officials to a site management visit to inspect the ongoing construction of the Meko ma Kongoa Grading and Marketing Shed in Athi Ward, Kitui South Sub County.
The project, a collaborative effort between the County Government of Kitui and Small Irrigation Value Addition Project (SIVAP), aims at enhancing agricultural productivity and market access for local farmers.The state-of-the-art facility which comprises a grading and marketing shed, an office block, a chemical store, toilets, and a secure perimeter fence, once completed, is expected to revolutionize agricultural practices in the region by providing farmers with a centralized platform to aggregate, grade, market, and store their produce efficiently.
During the site management visit, the project was officially handed over to the Project Management Committee (PMC) which will oversee its operations and ensure it serves the intended purpose of supporting farmers in the community.
Dr. Kimwele expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the project, stating, that the project is now 91.5% complete indicating it a testament to Governor Dr.Julius Malombe’s commitment to supporting farmers, providing them with modern infrastructure, empowering them to improve their livelihoods and contributing to the economic growth of Kitui County.
“This is a game-changer for our farmers, it will transform how you handle and market your produce. It’s a strategic investment in our county’s future, it will not only benefit our farmers today but also for the generations to come””The shed will significantly reduce post-harvest losses and enable you to fetch better prices for your produce” He noted.
The National Project Manager, Eng. J.K Kebeney echoed Dr. Kimwele’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in transforming the agricultural sector.”This project is more than just the infrastructure; it’s about empowering communities and creating sustainable livelihoods,” he said.
The Community expressed gratitude for the support provided by the county government and SIVAP
and further expressed optimism about the upcoming harvest season, with many planning to start purchasing millet and green grams as early as April.Also present were Francis Kitoo, the Director of Agriculture, and Patricia Koki, the County Project Coordinator among other Senior officials.
