Kitui County Holds Stakeholder Consultative Meeting on Mineral Policy

Kitui County’s Ministry of Energy, Environment, Climate Change, Forestry, Natural and Mineral Resources has embarked on a two-day stakeholder consultative meeting to review the draft Kitui County Mineral Policy.

The gathering brought together various stakeholders, including community representatives, government officials, and civil society organizations, to discuss ways to optimize mineral resources for wealth creation.

During the event, Chief Officer for Energy, Natural and Mineral Resources, Henry Nyamai, emphasized the county’s commitment to raising awareness about mineral opportunities.

“The department is going to hold community sensitization forums this financial year on minerals,” Nyamai stated.

He encouraged local communities to form cooperatives, noting that these groups would help them benefit from the mineral sector. He also stressed the importance of following the County Liaison Committee guidelines, which were established in 2014, as a framework for collaboration.

CO Nyamai called on the community to support development projects and urged investors to be transparent and engage with locals.

He further reaffirmed the county’s dedication to supporting artisanal miners, saying, “The government is committed to supporting artisanal miners across the county.”

The consultative meeting was attended by representatives from the Center for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRCE), ActionAid, Kitui Civil Society Organization Network, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and the regional mining office, along with community leaders from Kitui South, East, West, Mwingi Central, and North.
