Kitui County, Partners Review Impact of CHP Bicycle Program, Chart Path for Expansion

The County Government of Kitui, in partnership with the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) and World Bicycle Relief (WBR), held a high-level meeting on Thursday to assess the success of the Community Health Promoters (CHP) bicycle distribution initiative in Kitui South and Mwingi North.

Led by CMMB CEO Dr. James Kisia, the meeting brought together key stakeholders to evaluate the impact of the program, which achieved a 100 percent bicycle distribution to CHPs in the two sub-counties. The initiative, aimed at enhancing access to healthcare, has empowered CHPs to reach more households with essential health education and preventive care.

Following the positive outcomes, discussions turned to the upcoming second phase of the program. Governor Julius Malombe’s administration confirmed plans to expand the initiative to Mwingi Central and Kitui East sub-counties, in continued partnership with CMMB and WBR.

The meeting also outlined a roadmap for phase three, which will see the remaining four sub-counties benefit from the program. The County Government will fund bicycles for two of these areas, while the partner organizations will cover the remaining two.

“These bicycles are more than a means of transport. They are tools of transformation,” Governor Malombe emphasized. “They allow CHPs to effectively serve our communities by bringing healthcare to the doorsteps of those who need it most.”

The initiative is a core pillar of the Governor’s “Kitui Promise” agenda, which prioritizes affordable and accessible healthcare for all.
