Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has officially launched the Kitui County River Basins Sand Utilization and Conservation Committee at the county headquarters.
The initiative, guided by the Kitui County River Basins Sand Utilization and Conservation Act 2024, aims to regulate and manage sand harvesting while promoting environmental conservation.
Speaking at the event, Governor Malombe emphasized the importance of sustainable sand harvesting to protect the county’s river ecosystems and ensure equitable benefits for local communities.
As part of the implementation, seven site-based community sand groups have been established:
- Kivou River Site-Based Community Sand Group
- Enziu River Site-Based Community Sand Group
- Nuu River Site-Based Community Sand Group
- Mui River Site-Based Community Sand Group
- Mwingi River Site-Based Community Sand Group
- Waita River Site-Based Community Sand Group
- Tiva Site-Based Community Sand Group
More community groups are in the process of being formed to strengthen local participation in sand resource management.
The committee will play a crucial role in vetting and recommending the approval, rejection, transfer, and revocation of sand harvesting licenses. It is expected to offer strategic insights into sand value chain management and ensure the effective implementation of the Act.
Governor Malombe reiterated his administration’s commitment to balancing economic benefits and environmental conservation, urging community members to collaborate with the committee to ensure responsible sand harvesting practices.
The initiative is seen as a significant step toward curbing illegal sand harvesting, protecting river basins, and fostering sustainable development in Kitui County.
