Kitui, June 26, 2024 – In a move to enhance women’s health, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has inaugurated a free breast and cervical cancer screening clinic for female County Government staff. The two-day initiative is taking place at the Kitui County Referral Hospital.
Ruth Koki, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health and Sanitation, emphasized the clinic’s goal to facilitate early detection and treatment of these prevalent cancers, thereby reducing mortality rates associated with late diagnosis.
“Breast and cervical cancers are among the leading causes of death among women in our county and beyond,” Koki stated. “By offering free screenings to our staff, we aim to detect these diseases at an early, more treatable stage, thereby saving lives and improving the overall health of our employees.”
The program includes clinical breast exams and pap smears, along with educational sessions to raise awareness about the importance of regular screenings and self-examinations. This initiative reflects the County Government’s commitment, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, to provide essential, preventive, and promotive healthcare services to residents.
CECM Koki also revealed plans to extend the screening services to rural and underserved areas through mobile clinics, ensuring no woman is left behind in the fight against breast and cervical cancer. Additionally, a follow-up system has been established for patients who test positive, guaranteeing timely and appropriate treatment. This includes referrals to specialized facilities and access to counseling and support services.
This proactive step by the Kitui Health Ministry underscores its dedication to improving public health and addressing critical health challenges faced by women in the region.
