A growing wave of frustration is building among Kitui residents over the stalled development projects in the region, with many questioning why their elected leaders are not aggressively lobbying President William Ruto’s government for action.
One of the most glaring concerns is the incomplete Mbondoni-Migwani road, which has remained in a deplorable state despite repeated promises by successive administrations. Residents are now demanding that their leaders put aside political party loyalty and camp at State House if necessary to secure the much-needed projects.
The debate has sparked broader discussions on the effectiveness of opposition politics in the region. Many are pointing to ODM leader Raila Odinga’s strong influence, which has ensured that his Nyanza backyard continues to benefit from government projects—even when he is in the opposition. This has led to calls for the Kamba leadership to rethink their political approach to avoid being sidelined in national development agendas.
“We cannot continue playing opposition politics blindly while our people suffer. If our leaders truly care, they should be putting pressure on the government, just like other regions do,” said a frustrated Kitui South resident.
However, some argue that pushing for development while aligning with the ruling government could be seen as a betrayal of the party that sponsored them to power. This dilemma has left many wondering: should Kitui leaders stick to their party principles, or should they prioritize development by engaging the Kenya Kwanza administration more actively?
As 2027 approaches, residents say they will keenly watch their leaders’ actions. The call for development is growing louder, and the political landscape in Kitui may shift if tangible results are not delivered soon.
