Kitui Marks 18th World Rabies Day with Mass Vaccination Campaign in Mutomo

On Saturday, September 28, 2024 – The County Government of Kitui joined the global community in commemorating the 18th annual World Rabies Day with a mass vaccination drive held in Mutomo town , This year’s theme, “Breaking Rabies Boundaries,” highlights the importance of cross-sectoral and cross-border collaborations in combating the deadly disease.

Speaking at the event, Kitui’s Chief Officer for Livestock and Apiculture, Jonathan Kyambi, underscored the critical role of vaccinating dogs to prevent the spread of rabies.

“Rabies is 100 percent fatal but also 100 percent preventable. We must all ensure our dogs are vaccinated,” Kyambi stated.Kyambi further outlined several initiatives by the county Government in the fight against rabies, among them awareness campaigns and the ongoing dog vaccination programs.

To mark World Rabies Day, the Livestock Department donated 1,500 vaccines for the vaccination of dogs and donkeys in Mutomo.

Kyambi also announced that the county government plans to train veterinarians to educate schoolchildren about rabies prevention and proper dog care practices.Patricia Ngala, a resident of Mutomo who, along with her three children, was affected by rabies, shared her story. She revealed the high cost of treatment and urged the public to prioritize prevention.

“Treating rabies is very expensive. I urge everyone to vaccinate their dogs because prevention is better than cure,” she said, recalling the financial burden she faced.The event was supported by partners including Caritas Kitui, the Red Cross, and Equity Bank, who collaborated with the county in organizing the campaign.
