A section of Kitui Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) has vowed to initiate impeachment proceedings against Speaker Kevin Kinengo, accusing him of abuse of power and frustrating leadership changes within the assembly.
Speaking to the press outside the county assembly on Wednesday, the MCAs, led by Kyuso MCA Hon. Munyoki Mwinzi, condemned the speaker for allegedly refusing to acknowledge leadership changes made by the Wiper party.
The changes saw Kitui Township MCA Hon. Daniel Ngoima appointed as the new Majority Whip, replacing Kanyangi Ward MCA Hon. Katula. Additionally, Migwani MCA Hon. Harrison Maluki was replaced by Kyuso MCA Hon. Munyoki Mwinzi, but Speaker Kinengo reportedly declined to communicate these changes, leading to tensions within the assembly.
The situation escalated into a physical confrontation between two rival camps as MCAs demanded immediate recognition of the party’s directive.
Matinyani MCA Hon. Sylvester Kitheka criticized the speaker, accusing him of running the assembly for his personal interests. “We are going to impeach the speaker who has been frustrating the assembly for his own selfish gain,” Kitheka stated.
Chuluni MCA Hon. Vuthi echoed similar sentiments, stating that members were fed up with Kinengo’s leadership style. “He is managing the assembly like his own kiosk. If he does not change, we will have no option but to impeach him,” he warned.
Kitui Township MCA Hon. Daniel Ngoima also weighed in, saying that MCAs were exploring legal and procedural avenues to remove Kinengo, whom they accused of frustrating service delivery in the county.
Ikanga MCA hon cyrus Musyoka called out speaker for alleged abuse of power and said they are working on how to dehorn him.
Efforts to reach Speaker Kinengo for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls from journalists.
As tensions continue to rise within the Kitui County Assembly, all eyes are on the MCAs to see whether they will proceed with their impeachment threat or if a compromise will be reached.
