Kitui Set to Host 2025 Mashujaa Day as Ithookwe Stadium Gets Major Facelift

Kitui County is gearing up to host the 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations, following a high-level visit by the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, H.E. Salim Mvurya, to Ithookwe Stadium today. The visit marks a critical milestone ahead of the stadium’s transformation into a FIFA-standard facility.

During the visit, Kitui Governor H.E. Dr. Julius Malombe, EGH, and CS Mvurya officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing collaboration between the National Government and the County Government of Kitui on the stadium’s construction, management, and maintenance. The MoU is between the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports—through Sports Kenya—and the County Government’s Ministry of Culture, Gender, Youth, ICT, Sports and Social Services.

The upgrade of Ithookwe Stadium is set to cost KSh 800 million and will transform the venue into a 10,000-seater facility featuring a VIP pavilion, two VIP lounges, FIFA-standard administrative offices, a standard football pitch, and an athletics track.

Governor Malombe lauded President William Ruto for choosing Kitui as the venue for the national celebrations. “Kindly extend our greetings and gratitude to the President. He is very much welcome to Kitui,” he said.

CS Mvurya praised the site for its flat terrain and scenic environment, noting that it will ease the construction process. “Many stadiums in Kenya are built on rugged terrain, making their design very challenging, but Kitui is blessed with such good land. I will ensure an expedited process so that the contractor delivers the facility before Mashujaa Day,” he assured.

In line with Article 6(2) of the Constitution, which calls for cooperation and consultation between different levels of government, Governor Malombe emphasized the importance of leveraging partnerships to drive development in Kitui. He cited ongoing national government projects including eight new police stations, Umaa and Thwake Dams, and the Kwa Siku–Mbondoni Road as critical initiatives he is keen to see completed.

CS Mvurya was accompanied by a delegation from Sports Kenya, including Acting Director General Mr. Gabriel Komora and Assistant Director Julius Mbii. Senior Kitui County officials in attendance included CECMs Fredrik Kimanga, Gitonga Nkunda, Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, John Mwendandu, Mwikya Kilonzo, Phoebe Mutemi, Eng. Mulwa Itiko, and Chief Officers Gladys Kivoto and Nason Kang’alya. The County Security Team, led by County Commissioner Kipchumba Ruto, also joined the inspection tour.

With the countdown to Mashujaa Day 2025 officially on, Kitui stands ready to showcase its culture, development, and hospitality to the nation.

Delivering the Kitui County Promise.
