Kitui South MP, Dr. Racheal Nyamai, attended a key meeting of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Lands with Principal Secretary Hon. Nixon Korir of the State Department for Lands & Physical Planning to review Supplementary Estimates No. 2 for FY 2024/2025.
The State Department has proposed a Kshs. 2.174 billion adjustment, seeking an increase of Kshs. 404 million in Recurrent Expenditure and Kshs. 1.77 billion in Development Expenditure. The Committee will also engage the National Land Commission (NLC) separately on the same budgetary matters.
Following the discussions, the Committee will draft a report that the Chairperson will present before the Liaison Committee, which is currently processing the Supplementary Estimates No. 2. This comes as the Budget and Appropriations Committee awaits reconstitution and election of new leadership.
During the meeting, Dr. Nyamai raised the issue of land settlement for a section of Athi Ward residents currently occupying land owned by ranching companies. She emphasized the need for a win-win solution that safeguards the interests of both the residents and landowners.
Her push for a fair and lasting solution highlights the ongoing challenges of land ownership and settlement in Kitui South, with hopes that the Committee will prioritize the matter in its upcoming deliberations.
