The Kitui Water and Sanitation Company (KITWASCO) has officially launched its 5-year Strategic Plan (2024–2029), charting a bold course for sustainable water service delivery in Kitui County.
The launch event was held at a local hotel in Kitui town and was graced by Kitui County Deputy Governor H.E. Wambua Kanani, who led key county and company officials in unveiling the plan.
The Deputy Governor, accompanied by Water and Irrigation CECM Kitonga Nkunda, KITWASCO Managing Director June Munyao, Nzambani Ward MCA Hon. Musyoka Mbite, and KITWASCO board member James Munuve, emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in actualizing the plan’s ambitious goals.
H.E. Kanani called on KITWASCO staff, stakeholders, and the public to take ownership of the roadmap and align themselves with its vision. “To the Board of Directors and the management, you have Governor Malombe’s full support and confidence. Let this plan be a living document that adapts, inspires, and delivers,” he said.
The Deputy Governor underscored water access as a fundamental human right and a pillar of economic and social development. “Access to clean, safe, and affordable water is not just a basic human right—it is a cornerstone of public health, economic development, and environmental sustainability,” he added.
The newly launched Strategic Plan outlines KITWASCO’s commitment to professionalism, integrity, dedication, innovation, and enhanced customer satisfaction—now the organization’s core values.
It is fully aligned with the Kitui County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP), the Kitui Promise, Kenya’s Vision 2030, and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation.
The plan also highlights several pressing challenges that continue to affect the sector, including:
- Compliance with regulatory requirements
- Management of non-revenue water (NRW)
- Financial sustainability and rising operational costs
- Inadequate infrastructure for water and sewerage
- Climate change effects like prolonged droughts and erratic rainfall
H.E. Kanani urged KITWASCO to explore nature-based solutions such as solar-powered pumping systems and to enhance efficiency in water loss management. “The time to act is now—embracing innovation, sustainability, and resilience in our water systems is the only path forward,” he concluded.
The 2024–2029 Strategic Plan is expected to play a key role in delivering Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s water agenda, improving service coverage, and ensuring every household in Kitui has access to clean and reliable water.
