Kwa Vonza Member of the Kitui County Assembly, Hon. Mark Ndingo, has called for the abolition of the National Constituency Development Fund (CDF), advocating for the redirection of its resources to county governments.
According to Ndingo, allocating development funds to Members of Parliament is a duplication of roles, as the county governments are already tasked with local development initiatives. His comments come in the wake of a recent High Court ruling that declared the National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) Act of 2015 unconstitutional.
The bench, composed of Justices Kanyi Kimondo, Mugure Thande, and Roselyne Aburili, ruled that the fund, along with its projects and activities, would cease operations by June 30, 2026.Despite the CDF having been in operation since 2003, the court recognized that while the fund has contributed significantly to local communities across the 290 constituencies, its existence conflicts with the constitutional allocation of development roles, prompting its eventual termination.
Ndingo echoed this sentiment, calling for a more streamlined and effective approach to development through county governments, which are constitutionally mandated to handle such matters.
