Machakos Speaker Ann Kiusya Suspends 8 MCAs Over Disruptive Conduct

Machakos County Assembly has been thrown into political turmoil after Speaker Ann Kiusya suspended eight Members of County Assembly (MCAs) for 28 sitting days following dramatic disruptions during proceedings.

Among those suspended are Matungulu West MCA Raphael Nzau Lucky, Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka, Deputy Speaker Stephen Mwanthi, and nominated MCAs Catherine Kyee, Catherine Muvia, Anastasia Mutevu, and Hellen Ndeti.

The Speaker cited gross misconduct, including hurling insults at the Speaker, intimidating assembly officers — even the Sergeant-at-Arms — and creating chaos on the Assembly floor. The suspensions follow what Kiusya described as ongoing internal and external interference in Assembly affairs.

Tensions hit a boiling point on Monday when uproar broke out during a session in which Speaker Kiusya read a letter from the Wiper Party Secretary General, Shakila Abdalla, announcing leadership changes within the Assembly’s majority side. The announcement sparked heated exchanges and open defiance from a section of MCAs.

“This Assembly will not operate under threats or intimidation,” Speaker Kiusya said, vowing to uphold order and the rule of law within the chambers, the TCD digital reports

The incident marks a fresh chapter in the growing political wrangles rocking the Machakos County Assembly, with observers warning of deepening divisions in the wake of party-led power struggles.
