A fresh political storm is brewing in Ukambani politics after Mavoko MP Patrick Makau publicly took on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of tribal discrimination and political hypocrisy.
Speaking at a public function, Makau recounted a past encounter with Gachagua during his tenure as Deputy President, where he sought his intervention to stop demolitions in Mavoko. According to Makau, Gachagua dismissed him, saying that the Kamba community had no shareholding in government and advised him to seek help from Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka instead.
Makau has now fired back, stating unequivocally that he has no regrets for previously supporting a motion to impeach Gachagua, and would do so again if the matter is revisited.
“I went to him in good faith to help stop the suffering of my people during the demolitions. He told me to go to Kalonzo because the Kamba community had no stake in the government. If it’s Gachagua who will decide my political future, let me sink. I have no apologies,” said Makau.
In a retaliatory jab, Gachagua—while addressing a political rally organized by Kalonzo Musyoka in Machakos—urged Mavoko constituents to reject Makau in 2027, accusing him of betraying the Wiper party leader by voting in support of the impeachment motion.
“This is a man who turned against his own party leader when it mattered most. In 2027, send him to political oblivion,” Gachagua declared.
The rally, held in Machakos, was attended by only one MP out of the eight elected from the county, further highlighting deepening cracks between Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and other elected leaders. Political analysts suggest the low turnout is a sign of strained relations between the governor and local lawmakers.
The widening rift among Ukambani leaders adds a new layer of complexity to the region’s political landscape, as realignments ahead of 2027 begin to take shape.
