A political storm is brewing in Kitui County after Matinyani Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Hon. Sylvester Kitheka, widely known as Yaamu, launched a blistering attack on County Assembly Speaker Kelvin Kinengo for allegedly defying Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
In a fiery statement issued on Wednesday, Yaamu accused Speaker Kinengo of “holding the County Assembly hostage” by allowing committee meetings to proceed despite a major political event hosted by Kalonzo Musyoka in Tseikuru — the Wiper leader’s rural home and a symbolic heartland of the Kamba political base.
“This is pure madness,” Yaamu said. “Kitui County Assembly, where the Wiper Party enjoys a clear majority, is today in committee sittings while the eyes of the nation are on Tseikuru. It is a big day for the Kamba community, and yet our own Assembly is acting in open defiance.”
The Matinyani MCA was particularly scathing in his criticism of Speaker Kinengo, whom he accused of turning his back on the party leadership and the larger Ukambani cause. Yaamu expressed outrage that Kinengo, a former Personal Assistant to Kalonzo Musyoka and a native of Tseikuru himself, was chairing a Powers and Privileges Committee meeting instead of facilitating the Assembly’s participation in the Tseikuru event.
“To crown it all with a middle finger to the Wiper Party Leader and Ukambani Kingpin, our Speaker is chairing a committee meeting in pure defiance,” Yaamu lamented. “Akamba twaoiwe nuu kweli? [Are we really okay as a community?]”
The remarks signal mounting political tension within the Kitui County Assembly, where internal party dynamics and questions of loyalty to the Wiper Party leadership appear to be driving a wedge between elected leaders. With Wiper commanding a significant majority in the Assembly, Yaamu’s statement reflects broader discontent over perceived indifference to party directives and regional unity.
Multiple attempts to reach Speaker Kinengo for a response were unsuccessful by the time of publishing.
This development comes at a time when Kalonzo Musyoka is seeking to consolidate support from Ukambani leaders ahead of anticipated political realignments nationally.
Ends.
