Homa Bay Town MP George Kaluma has fired a sharp retort at Nyandarua Senator John Methu following the latter’s complaints about police brutality during recent anti-government protests.
In a pointed social media post that has since gone viral, Kaluma mocked Methu’s emotional reaction to being teargassed, saying the senator needed to toughen up to survive life in the opposition.
“One tear gas canister and you are crying all over like a baby. Harden up to be in the opposition my friend, sisi tuko holiday,” Kaluma wrote, referring to the perceived comfort enjoyed by those aligned with the current administration.
The comment comes in the wake of Monday’s demonstrations in Nairobi, during which several members of the opposition were reportedly dispersed with tear gas as they attempted to address the media and supporters regarding issues surrounding the Finance Bill and governance concerns.
Senator Methu, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, had condemned the police’s use of force, calling it excessive and a threat to democracy.
Kaluma’s remarks sparked mixed reactions online, with some Kenyans criticizing the MP for insensitivity while others praised his bluntness.
As tensions rise ahead of the next parliamentary session, both sides appear to be digging in — and trading barbs in public and on social media has become the new norm in Kenya’s political discourse.
