Munathi Earth Dam Commissioned to Bolster Water Supply in Kitui South

The Kitui County Government today inaugurated the newly constructed Munathi Earth Dam in Ndatani/Vote Village, Ikanga/Kyatune Ward, marking a significant milestone in water security for Kitui South Sub-County.

Chief Officer for Agriculture and Fisheries, Gladys Kivoto, officially opened the dam—boasting a holding capacity of 24,500 m³—under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock’s Department of Agricultural Mechanization Services. The facility is poised to provide a reliable source of water for domestic consumption, crop irrigation, and livestock watering.

“Water provision remains a top priority under Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s administration,” Kivoto affirmed, underscoring the alignment of the dam project with the county’s 16-sector development blueprint, The Kitui Promise.

In tandem with the commissioning ceremony, Kivoto also launched the desilting operation at the nearby Manzee Earth Dam—another Department of Agricultural Mechanization Services initiative aimed at restoring and enhancing existing water infrastructure.

Area Member of County Assembly, Hon. Cyrus Musyoka Sonko, lauded the governor’s leadership and the timely intervention, noting that improved water access will invigorate agricultural productivity and strengthen livelihoods across Kitui South.

“This dam will greatly benefit our community,” Sonko said, highlighting its potential to mitigate the perennial water shortages that have hampered farming and household needs.

Also in attendance were Mwangu Ivuti, the Governor’s Political Advisor; Kennedy Mutati, Director for Water; and other senior county officials, who collectively pledged ongoing support for similar water-resource projects throughout the county.
