Outspoken ODM Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has stirred controversy by strongly opposing male circumcision, labeling it as “male genital mutilation.”
In a statement that has sparked heated debate, Kaluma questioned the necessity of the practice, arguing that no animals undergo circumcision except for a few human communities that have been “lied to” about their heritage.
“Donkeys don’t circumcise. All animals don’t circumcise except a few human beings who have been lied to that they are grandchildren of Abraham, a man who lived in the desert without water!” Kaluma declared.
His remarks challenge a deeply rooted cultural and religious practice, particularly in Kenya, where circumcision is widely observed among various communities for religious, cultural, and health reasons.
While his comments have gained support from anti-circumcision activists, they have also drawn sharp criticism from religious and cultural leaders who defend the practice as an important tradition.
Kaluma’s statement adds to the ongoing global debate on circumcision, with some advocating for its health benefits, while others view it as an unnecessary and harmful practice.
It remains to be seen whether his stance will influence policy or provoke further public discourse on the issue.
