Nairobi – President William Samoei Ruto has signed the IEBC Amendment Bill 2024 into law during a ceremony held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi. This bill marks a significant milestone as the first to be passed by Parliament based on the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report.

The IEBC Amendment Bill 2024 aims to enhance the country’s electoral management system, addressing longstanding challenges and implementing key reforms to ensure more transparent, efficient, and credible elections. The bill’s passage and subsequent enactment are expected to bolster public confidence in the electoral process and strengthen the democratic framework of Kenya.

In his remarks, President Ruto emphasized the importance of the new legislation in fostering a more robust and accountable electoral system. “This law represents a pivotal step in our commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring that every Kenyan’s voice is heard and respected in the electoral process,” he stated.

The NADCO report, which provided the foundation for the bill, was the result of extensive consultations and deliberations involving various stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and electoral experts. The report outlined critical areas for reform, such as the composition and independence of the IEBC, voter registration, and the management of election results.

The signing ceremony at KICC was attended by DP Rigathi Gachagua, key government officials, members of Parliament, Opposition leaders led by Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula
Opiyo Wandanyi and representatives from the IEBC, and other stakeholders who played a role in the bill’s development and passage.

The new law is anticipated to be a cornerstone in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions and processes.
