PS Jonathan Mueke Highlights New Reforms in Livestock Sector at State House Meeting

The Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, today joined President William Samoei Ruto, Cabinet Secretaries, fellow Principal Secretaries, and county governors for a high-level consultative meeting at State House focused on evaluating the progress of key inter-governmental development projects.

Speaking after the meeting, PS Mueke reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the livestock sector by enhancing coordination and service delivery within the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

“As directed, we will streamline and consolidate the operations of livestock-related agencies and departments to enhance efficiency and service delivery,” said Mueke.

Among the major reforms announced is the introduction of a comprehensive livestock traceability system. The government plans to register livestock farmers nationwide and roll out an electronic voucher (e-voucher) system for animal vaccination. This initiative mirrors the success of the subsidised fertiliser distribution model and is expected to revolutionize livestock disease control and farmer support.

“These measures are critical to improving disease surveillance, livestock management, and ensuring better market access for our farmers,” Mueke added.

The consultative meeting emphasized collaboration between national and county governments in delivering tangible development outcomes, especially in agriculture, health, infrastructure, and economic empowerment. The livestock reforms are part of broader efforts to modernize Kenya’s agricultural value chains and uplift rural livelihoods.
