The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the livestock sector through the Animal Identification and Traceability System (ANITRAC), a key initiative aimed at improving animal health, ensuring food safety, and unlocking new markets for Kenya’s livestock and animal products.
On Friday, Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, chaired a high-level ANITRAC Steering Committee meeting. The session, held in Nairobi, brought together senior ministry officials and key stakeholders to assess the progress of the system’s implementation and discuss strategies to fast-track its nationwide rollout.
PS Mueke emphasized the critical role of ANITRAC in transforming the livestock value chain, citing its potential to enhance disease surveillance, promote transparency in the meat supply chain, and meet export market requirements.
“ANITRAC is not just a system — it’s a game-changer for our livestock farmers and the entire value chain. With accurate data on animal movement and health, we can build trust with both local and international markets,” said Mueke.
Stakeholders present included representatives from the Kenya Veterinary Board, Kenya Meat Commission, county governments, and development partners. The committee reviewed milestones achieved so far and identified areas requiring technical and financial support to ensure full implementation.
The system will see livestock tagged and monitored throughout their lifecycle, from birth to slaughter, providing vital data to inform policy and investment decisions.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development plans to intensify public awareness campaigns and work closely with counties to roll out the program effectively across pastoral and farming communities.
