The Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, on Friday joined H.E. President William Samoei Ruto and a host of other leaders at the 10th Annual Dairy Farmers Field Day held in Meru County.
The high-profile event celebrated the tremendous gains made in Kenya’s dairy sector, attributed to ongoing government reforms aimed at making the industry more lucrative for farmers.
Thanks to these interventions, dairy farmers are now earning over KSh 50 per litre of milk — a significant rise that has boosted rural incomes and stimulated growth in the value chain. The sector’s total value has risen sharply from KSh 40 billion to KSh 59 billion in recent years.
In a major boost to dairy cooperatives, the government flagged off a consignment of modern milk coolers to various groups across Meru County. These coolers are expected to play a key role in reducing post-harvest losses, improving milk preservation, and enhancing the bargaining power of smallholder farmers.
PS Mueke reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to making dairy farming a more profitable and sustainable venture, underscoring the importance of innovation, proper storage, and strong cooperative movements.
“The journey to transform dairy farming in Kenya is well underway. We are not just supporting production — we are strengthening the entire value chain,” said the PS.
The event brought together stakeholders from across the agricultural sector, including farmers, cooperative leaders, extension officers, and policymakers, all united in a shared vision of elevating Kenya’s dairy industry to global standards.
