Celebrated Kenyan author and academic Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o has died in the United States after a long illness, his family has confirmed. The literary icon passed away at the age of 86, marking the end of a remarkable career that spanned decades.
Ngũgĩ, hailed as East Africa’s foremost novelist and a fierce advocate for African languages and decolonization, was known for works such as Weep Not, Child, The River Between, and Decolonising the Mind. His writings inspired generations across Africa and the world.
The fallen “mugumo tree,” as he was fondly referred to, leaves behind a towering legacy in literature, culture, and political thought. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
