Recent claims by certain contractors and their hired operatives against the Chief Officer for Water, Mr. Nathan Vungo, are nothing more than a desperate attempt to derail the ongoing transparency and accountability reforms in the Ministry. The coordinated attacks—fueled by those accustomed to manipulating tendering processes for personal gain—are aimed at tarnishing the reputation of a dedicated public servant who is simply doing his job: ensuring that public resources are used effectively and that every tendering process follows the law.
It is no secret that for years, unscrupulous individuals have benefited from backdoor dealings and favoritism in the awarding of contracts. However, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, this culture of impunity is coming to an end. The insistence that all procedures be followed is not an attack on anyone; it is a fundamental principle of good governance. The ministry will not be held hostage by a few individuals who believe that public contracts are their personal entitlement.
The recent smear campaign, orchestrated through a well-known town activist and hired goons, is a clear indication that these contractors are unwilling to compete fairly. Instead of complying with the law, they have resorted to intimidation and propaganda. This, however, will not work.
Mr. Nathan Vungo has made it clear: threats and intimidation will not alter his firm stand on transparency and fairness. Contractors who feel aggrieved should engage the office professionally as he has an open door rather than resorting to cheap theatrics. The people of Kitui deserve clean water and efficient service delivery, not political sideshows meant to protect a few corrupt interests.
The administration of Dr. Malombe remains committed to ensuring that public funds benefit the people of Kitui, not a cartel of self-serving individuals. Those who seek to undermine this mission will find themselves on the wrong side of history.
