The national government has launched a livestock restocking program in Kitui County aimed at reviving livelihoods devastated by prolonged drought that wiped out thousands of animals across the region.
Through the State Department for Livestock, each of the eight constituencies in the county will receive 495 goats, with 99 vulnerable households in each constituency receiving five goats to help them rebuild their livelihoods.
The distribution exercise officially kicked off today in Mwingi West constituency. It was led by Mr. Patrick Ngere, who represented the Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke.
Speaking during the launch, Mr. Ngere said the initiative is part of the government’s broader drought recovery efforts targeting pastoral communities in arid and semi-arid regions.
“This program brings renewed hope to families that were heavily affected by the drought. It is designed to empower vulnerable households and help them recover economically,” he said.
PS Mueke, in a statement, emphasized the importance of livestock to rural economies, saying restocking is a critical step in ensuring long-term resilience among pastoralists.
Residents of Mwingi West lauded the initiative, terming it timely and impactful. The program will soon be rolled out in the remaining constituencies across Kitui County.
