Kitui East Member of Parliament Hon. Nimrod Mbai has taken a swipe at his Mwingi Central counterpart Hon. Gideon Mulyungi, urging him to focus on development and desist from what he termed as “cheap politics.”
Speaking during a women and youth empowerment forum held in Kyuso, Mwingi North, Mbai challenged MP Mulyungi to align himself with development-focused leaders, saying that doing so would benefit the residents of Mwingi Central.
“As much as we respect our fellow leaders, we must tell them the facts on the ground. Mulyungi should align himself with development-minded leaders for his people to benefit fully,” Mbai stated.
He further questioned Mulyungi’s commitment to tangible development, accusing him of riding on President William Ruto’s recent visits to Kitui and Mwingi regions for personal political gain.
Mbai took issue with a recent statement attributed to Mulyungi: “When President Ruto comes to Mwingi, he has to come with Mwingi County.” Responding to this, Mbai emphasized that the creation or recognition of new counties is a constitutional matter and not within the President’s unilateral powers.
“Counties are clearly defined in the Constitution. If MP Mulyungi really wants Mwingi to become a county, then he should table a motion in Parliament to create it. Let it be discussed there, and if necessary, we should hold a referendum,” he said.
The Kitui East legislator accused Mulyungi of prioritizing political positioning over delivering development to his constituents, warning that citizens are now more politically aware and expect genuine service.
“Our people can now see through political games. What they want is real leadership that brings results,” Mbai said, adding that the region’s leaders should embrace honest and fair politics, not alliances built on personal ambition and favoritism.
The empowerment event brought together hundreds of women and youth from the larger Mwingi region and served as a platform for leaders to address key issues affecting the area, including governance, economic empowerment, and equitable development.
