Success Story: Kitui County’s Improved Referral health System Saves Lives of Mother and Newborn

Kitui County, On 27th May 2024 – The swift and coordinated efforts of the Kitui County Ministry of Health and Sanitation, under the leadership of County Executive Committee Member Madam Ruth Koki, successfully saved the lives of a mother and her newborn baby following complications after childbirth.

At approximately 4:55 am on 27th May 2024, a mother delivered her baby safely at Tiva dispensary in Kitui Central Sub-County. However, shortly after delivery, she developed severe post-partum hemorrhage.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Tiva dispensary nurse Rebecca Kasina promptly sought assistance from the office of Reproductive Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health.

An ambulance was immediately dispatched to Tiva dispensary, and the mother and her baby were urgently referred to Kitui County Referral Hospital. Upon arrival, the medical team at the referral hospital applied high-impact interventions, leading to a positive outcome.

Both the mother and her baby survived the ordeal and were admitted to the hospital’s maternity ward for close observation.After two days of monitoring, the mother and her baby were discharged on 29th May 2024 in stable condition.

The mother and her family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Governor H.E Dr. Julius Malombe E.G.H for the enhanced referral system that played a crucial role in saving their lives.

This incident highlights the effectiveness of Kitui County’s improved referral system in addressing maternal and newborn emergencies. The coordinated response and timely medical interventions underscore the commitment of Kitui County’s health services to safeguarding the lives of mothers and their babies.
