A promising young educator and grassroots activist, Mr. Brian Mulandi Kitalinga, has announced his intention to vie for the position of Vice Treasurer in the Kitui County branch of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in the upcoming 2026 elections.
Mr. Kitalinga, a History and Government teacher at Ilika Secondary School in Lower Yatta, Kitui Rural, is widely respected for his unwavering dedication to both his students and community. His teaching career, which spans over a decade, is marked by a remarkable transformation of the History and Government department at Ilika Secondary. When he was first posted there, the subject’s mean score was at a concerning 2.0. Under his stewardship, it has surged to an impressive 8.4 in the most recent KCSE exams.
Born and raised in Kitui County, Mr. Kitalinga is an alumnus of Kenyatta University and a product of Muthue Secondary School in Ikutha Sub-County. His journey into activism began early. In 2004, as a Form Three student, he led a student strike against poor administration at Muthue Secondary, walking over 11 kilometers to Mutomo town to seek intervention from authorities. His bold move resulted in a change of leadership at the school, leading to improved academic performance and increased enrollment.
Mr. Kitalinga’s passion for advocacy extended beyond school. In 2016, he joined forces with former Kitui Senator David Musila in a protest held in Kibwezi, pushing for the tarmacking of the Kitui–Kibwezi road. Along with fellow youth from Kitui South, he also petitioned the National Assembly on the same matter — a collective effort that eventually contributed to the realization of the long-awaited road construction.
Aside from his activism, Mr. Kitalinga has played a key role in community development. He was instrumental in mobilizing resources during the construction of a boys’ dormitory at his alma mater, Muthue Secondary School, and has consistently used his social media platforms to engage the public on governance issues, particularly critiquing the performance of the current Kitui South MP.
Speaking to TCD digital Editor, Mr. Kitalinga expressed his desire to bring transformative leadership to KUPPET Kitui County. “I believe the union needs fresh, dynamic voices who understand the realities on the ground. I will champion transparency, inclusivity, and the welfare of teachers across the county,” he said.
As the 2026 KUPPET elections draw nearer, Mr. Kitalinga’s candidacy is already drawing attention, especially among younger teachers who see in him a reflection of their aspirations for a more proactive and accountable union leadership.
