In the arid plains of Athi Ward, Kitui South, decorated farmer Michael Kivoto is rewriting the narrative of agriculture in semi-arid regions. Leveraging smart farming techniques and the dependable waters of River Athi, Mr. Kivoto has transformed his ten-acre farm into a lush haven of diverse crops, including cabbages, onions, butternuts, and maize.

Contrary to popular belief that crops like cabbages thrive exclusively in cooler, wetter regions such as the Mt. Kenya area, Mr. Kivoto’s success demonstrates the untapped potential of irrigated farming in Kitui County. His meticulous irrigation system, which channels water from the nearby river, ensures his crops flourish even in the harsh climatic conditions of the region.
