A powerful political message emerged during the funeral of the late matriarch Veronica Mulila, as several leaders openly expressed backing for Safaricom Group Chief Risk Officer and gubernatorial hopeful Nicholas Mulila as a potential successor to Julius Malombe in the 2027 race for the Kitui governorship.
The funeral ceremony, held at Katheka village in Kitui West Constituency, attracted over six thousand mourners from across Kitui County and neighbouring regions. What began as a solemn farewell for the respected matriarch quickly transformed into a gathering with clear political undertones, as leaders praised Mulila’s leadership qualities and quietly encouraged him to continue serving the people.
Governor Julius Malombe, who attended the funeral alongside residents and leaders, described the late Veronica Mulila as a devoted mother who dedicated her life to raising disciplined and responsible children while also supporting the welfare of her community.
Malombe stated that the values of discipline, integrity, and hard work instilled in the Mulila family were evident in the achievements and leadership demonstrated by her children.
Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani also paid tribute to the late matriarch, commending her for nurturing children who continue to contribute positively to the county’s development.
Several leaders addressing the gathering described Veronica Mulila as a pillar of wisdom, unity, and strength both within her family and the wider community.
Among those present were Senator Enoch Wambua, Woman Representative Irene Kasalu, former Kitui West MP Edith Nyenze, Joshua Kimilu, and Ben Muasya, alongside several Members of the County Assembly, county executives, and representatives from the County Budget and Economic Forum.
Speakers urged the Mulila family to remain united and honour the legacy of the late matriarch by continuing to serve the community with integrity and dedication.
Political observers noted that the strong show of support witnessed during the funeral indicates growing momentum around Nicholas Mulila ahead of the 2027 elections, when Governor Julius Malombe is expected to exit office after completing his term.
While Mulila has not publicly and officially declared his candidacy, many residents and leaders present said the overwhelming support he received during the ceremony reflects increasing confidence in his leadership and his potential role in shaping the future of Kitui County.
Mulila is a prominent figure who embodies and carries the aspirations of many people and a better future for the younger generation.
