The University of Nairobi has appointed Eng. Prof. Ayub Njoroge Gitau as its 9th Vice-Chancellor following a special sitting of the University Council held on Thursday, May 14, 2026. The appointment marks a new leadership chapter for Kenya’s premier institution of higher learning.
In the changes announced by the Council, Prof. Josiah Omollo Aduda was also appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Finance, Planning and Development. Both appointments took effect immediately on May 14, 2026, as the university moves to strengthen its leadership and governance structures.
The Council further commended Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson for her service as Acting Vice-Chancellor during the transition period, praising her dedication and stewardship at the helm of the institution.
The leadership appointments are expected to shape the future direction of the University of Nairobi in academic excellence, research, innovation and institutional development.
