The Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi has announced it will reject donations from politicians. Archbishop Philip Anyolo revealed that contributions from President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja will be refunded.
The move aligns with the Church’s commitment to ethical practices and transparency in its operations. Archbishop Anyolo emphasized that the decision seeks to ensure that Church activities remain free from political influence.
The Archdiocese of Nairobi issues a statement regarding donations made by President Ruto and other politicians to Soweto Catholic Church, referencing Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) directives that discourage political donations to churches and the use of church events for political self-promotion.
In line with these directives, the Archdiocese has decided to refund donations of Ksh 200,000 from the Governor of Nairobi to the choir and Parish Missionary Council (PMC) Ksh 600,000 from President Ruto to the choir and PMC and Ksh 2 million from President Ruto for the construction of the Fathers’ house.
