On Tuesday 4th June, 2024 -The County Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in Collaboration with the Emergency Locust Response Program ( ELRP) embarked on the disbursement of cheques to Community Driven Development Committees (CDDCs) in Mwingi Central, Nguni, Waita, Kivou , Tseikuru, Mumoni, Kyuso, Ngomeni and Tharaka wards of Mwingi Central and Mwingi North Sub-Counties with the aim of helping farmers rehabilitate and restore their livelihoods through Micro -projects, Sub projects and Farmer Producer Organizations after the invasion of Desert Locust in 2019.
The initiative which is funded by the World Bank, is implemented in 15 counties that were severely affected by the first wave of Desert Locust in 2019 Kitui included.
The Project among others, supports farmers by providing financial support to Common Interest Groups (CIGs) and Vulnerable Marginalized Groups (VMGs).
Speaking when he led the exercise, Kitui CECM for Agriculture and Livestock Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele said the disbursement will benefit farmer groups in nine wards, with each ward receiving Ksh. 4,290,000 aimed at improving agricultural productivity and enhancing Livelihoods.
The CECM further reaffirmed Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s commitment to collaborate with the National Government and development partners to uplift the livelihoods of Kitui residents as envisaged in the 16 sector development agenda.
“This initiative demonstrates our unwavering commitment to supporting our farmers and improving their livelihoods, we will continue to work closely with our partners to ensure sustainable agricultural development in Kitui, he stated.
Mr. Stephen Muvenge, the chairman Central Ward CDDC thanked the county Government and ELRP for the project saying the goats they are set to buy will be of great nutritional value and wealth creation.
The CECM was accompanied by the Chief Officer Agriculture and Fisheries Gladys Kivoto who led the exercise in Tseikuru and Kyuso wards of Mwingi North Sub County along side the Chief Officer Livestock and Apiculture Jonathan Kyambi and the Project coordinator Henry Murage.
